"Scaduto said he told the officers he was "shooting to celebrate Obama as president."
Narada Thomas, 23, of the 1200 North Central Avenue, allegedly gave a similar explanation after he was arrested with a handgun near his home. "He said he had the gun because he wanted to celebrate Obama becoming the first black president," Scaduto said.
Kenneth Smith, 24, of the 6700 block of South Ada Street, was arrested after he allegedly fired a handgun outside his home. Smith, who is on parole for a previous weapons conviction, told authorities that "the police only arrested him because a black man won for president," Scaduto said.
Robert Morgan, 54, of the 5700 South Lowe Avenue, appeared to have simply been caught up in the excitement.
When officers arrested him for allegedly firing a handgun into the air from his back porch, "He told the officers, 'Everyone else is shooting off their guns—I figured, why not?'" Scaduto said."
I don't know of any responsible gun owners who would simply "shoot in the air", and believe me, I know many many of them! What happens when you do not allow gun ownership? Guess what? Folks will still get a gun, as this story illustrates! So how do the rest of us law abiding citizen protect ourselves, if we are NOT allowed to legally own guns?Also, the comment section is elucidating as well. Here's one example;
"Are you kiding me? That's celebrating? In a city where handguns are illegal? Funny how the law only applies to some people. And an interesting way to describe it. A better way would have been the city was besieged by random senseless gunfire. I can't ever recall similar scenes after any other election in recent history. Also the above reporting of the evenings events was completely downplayed. The reason more people weren't arrested was because the officers were discouraged by their commanding officers because that would have angered the crowd and most likely created more violence."
Here's part of another comment from someone who grew up in that neighborhood, that gives me more hope;
"I do not see this as a significant advancement for black people. I see this as a significant advancement for the average american. Obama represents the average hard working american. He is not from a rich family. His family had to sacrifice to make a better life for him and get him into the best schools. He lived with the minimum necessities at the beginning of his career because he was not making that much money. He understand the basics that the average amercican needs: education, healthcare, their homes, and retirement. If anything, we should learn from him."
Keep in mind, I do not correct spelling et al, from my copy/paste. It's all original.

Does firing guns in the air to celebrate sound familiar from somewhere? It's what we see in third world American-hating countries carried out by people who are zealots. As long as America is down, or being bashed, they're happy enough to go firing into the air in a festive fashion.
Fasten your seatbelts people, it's going to be a bumpy ride...

I think the black woman in a video who said, "Obama's gonna pay my mortgage and buy my gas," was very telling.
I guarantee you he is NOT going to pay MY mortgage or buy MY gas!

I strongly believe in individual gun ownership. However, the idea that one could, even in a group, defend oneself against some form of "Fascist government takeover", whether from the far left or right, with a hand-held gun is a fantasy. Any "takeover" would involve military/police control (if necessary) and would most likely manifest itself in an economic upheaval (uh oh, sounds familiar, and it didn't originate on the left this time...). When your bank funds are "held" and you're dependent upon a government for every need, who exactly are you going to shoot with your gun?

I'm unsure of your point? Is it that I would be helpless against a fascist gov't? Or are you trying to warn me about gov't confiscation of my IRA, et al?
Your point eludes me.
