Sorry, Mr. Bush! I'm Not Convinced.
Mr. President, you were out of town during the time we in down-home America were frantically trying to kill this abomination of a "comprehensive" immigration bill. So you came home to breathe new life into it by visiting Capital Hill. With your trip to the hill in mind, I wrote the following to my senators;
"Please do not be swayed toward voting for this bill. I support President Bush in most areas, but not THIS ONE! The "instantly legal" folks, courtesy of this bill, will not be screened to weed out the criminals, and most of the newly-legal immigrants will never care to become legal American citizens. They just want to work here and send their money back home. The laws we currently have in place are not being enforced. Why should we believe the provisions in this bill will be enforced?
The overburdened bureaucracy cannot handle the mandates of this bill. Allow the current illegals to remain, enforce the current laws and deport them when they break any law, and build the fence as provided in Duncan Hunter's bill cum law, and forget about instituting "comprehensive" legislation, PLEASE! It will be remembered in the election '08, so warn your fellow senators...especially Spector and Graham."
Dubya is the name of my puppy...but right now I'm thinking seriously of trying to change his name. Thank you Mr. Bush for your positions on GWOT, but your positioning on the border has me totally flumoxed. Do you not realize that al Qaeda is using your ridiculous "immigration" rationalization to cross our borders?

Hi Dagney...
I too have written my senators about my displeasure with this bill. What is President Bush doing? He is trying to keep the murderers out of our house while leaving the back door wide open. I am soooo ticked off about this that I decided to add a comment here...breaking from my silence. Still love your blog & read it every day my friend.

No, he does not understand the breadth and risk of the error of his ways...

Sad to say but the President has betrayed us. If this thing passes it will deal a huge blow to conservatism and the GOP. Either way, though, it's the end of the Bush presidency on domestic affairs as far as I'm concerned.
