A Message From An Iraqi
"Dear Dagney
I went and googled myself <hameed abid> this morning and found your Blog
with me talking to and advising Pelosi on what to do when she is in
Demascus
with Bashar Al Asad.
Please pass on this to the Americans/ Coalition troops serving in
Iraq. It
is as relevant today as it was when I wrote it back in August 2005.

An Iraqi Message To Our Troops
This message to your brave Soldiers who are fighting in Iraq, is from
the
heart of an Iraqi who can write in (bad) English sometimes.
SOLDIERS
You have come to Iraq voluntarily to represent the best and finest human
face currently on this earth and the moral clarity and courage, from
your
Countries, to advance the march of Freedom, Human Rights, The Rule of
Law,
and Democracy in Iraq.
We ( the silent majority of Iraqis who are often unable to speak with
you to
express our true feelings and respect in your language) wish to thank
you
from the bottom of our hearts, and thank your God ( whatever you
conceive
him to be) for guiding you to willingly accept your presence on our
land and
its oppressed (for centuries), destroyed and impoverished majority of
its
people.
Your courage, devotion to your duties, your respect to the traditions
and
customs of your hosts, your bravery and valour and above all your
sacrifices
away from your loved ones, should be something to be proud of by
yourselves,
your families, friends and relatives back home, wherever you have come
from.
You have come to us to free us from our own Tyrants, Despots,
Individuals
and Groups who tortured, killed, maimed, imprisoned, and disbursed us
and
did untold horrible things to us sometimes for no reason other than our
thoughts and dreams.
We are proud to have you with us mending our Schools and Hospitals, the
Courts, the Police Stations, guarding our borders and skies, and the
Fire
Stations and the orphanages, the Roads, Waterways, the Electricity
plants,
the telphone exchanges, the oil installations, the bridges, the
airports ,
the railways, the Marshes, and much more and helping us rebuilding our
personalities to think positively in hope and in anticipation of the
good
for our beloved Country, Iraq.
We thank you deeply for your being with us supporting and helping us and
helping our future peace loving children and grand children to live FREE
like the rest of the civilised world, with intgerity honour, and grace.
Soldiers in Iraq. Your countries should be proud of you.
May God protect you and bring you back safely home as soon as possible.
Kind regards
Hameed Abid

Very interesting. I do think there are a lot of Iraqis like Hameed Abid. He mentions that Iraqis like him are a "silent majority". Why is this? Several reasons, I think.
One is that it only takes a few violent thugs to keep a larger number of good people silent, especially when the latter aren't organizied.
Second, they're not sure if the Americans will really stay through to the end. It's risky to throw in your lot with us.
Third, corruption is so ingrained in that part of the world that good people hardly stand a chance.
Fourth, the Iraqi Police cannot be trusted. The Iraqi Army is better, but few people want to go to the IP with their problems.
Lastly, Saddam destroyed what civil society there was in Iraq.
So it's a fight against the extremists so that the average Iraqi can survive. We just have to hang in there until we can complete the mission.

Dagney...
This is a great piece...and I hope you won't mind if I share it with the dozen people that visit my place on a daily basis.
While this might be nearly two years old, I can't help but think that the boys/girls/men and women who are now serving there (probably the same crew that was there in 2005 unfortunately...) are still doing great work.
I too believe that some good will come of this action, but only if we're willing to continue to stand alongside future allies, like the new Iraqi government. When I raised my right hand in 1980...I really did believe that one day I'd be called to fight in Eastern Europe in a struggle to tear down an iron curtain...today we have good, strong allies from those very countries where I figured I'd have to spill blood....or have mine spilled. One day, I hope that I can say that the Iraqis have been our close defense partners for years...since 2008 perhaps?
Keep up the good work!

Thank you for this post, Dagney. I hope it's okay to post this over at DoD">http://dodnews.blogspot.com/">DoD Daily News. (I do not know the full URL yet, so I just gave the short one.)
Hameed is a fine man and Iraqi. May God bless him and keep him safe (and his family). Have a great day.

Rosemary, it's absolutely fine to post it there. The link you left is not a good one, so feel free to leave the correct one again.
