San Fran Nan's Inauspicious Beginning
"Gillibrand said she didn't expect she'd have to cast a vote during freshmen week.
"I didn't realize it was going to have to happen," said Gillibrand, who was quickly getting acclimated to the pace of Congress and she walked briskly to lunch while talking to a reporter.
Pelosi met one-on-one with jittery freshmen Democrats Tuesday to make her case for Murtha, a Vietnam veteran who has led calls to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.
Pelosi's relationship with Hoyer became strained in 2001 when they competed for the post of Democratic leader in the House. Pelosi won and Hoyer became the whip, the party's chief vote-counter.
Gillibrand said she told Pelosi she will vote for Hoyer because he twice traveled to New York to campaign for her. She said Hoyer telephoned three weeks ago seeking her support and she gave her word."
Girlfriend, you've been spanked! That encounter was probably not the only one of its kind. I don't know if Pelosi's family are Sicilian, but I do know she ran a tight ship in her minority whip position pre-election, so when "she who must be obeyed" Pelosi, is not obeyed, and is fed her political head on a platter her very first day of being Speaker of the House, it must be a bitter pill to swallow. I don't know about you, but it put a smile on my face and a chuckle in my heart all day!
San Fran Nan's defeat today was not the only cause for chuckles. She recently bragged how her tenure over the House would be the cleanest, most honest House in history. You've got to know that freshman House members have to be scratching their heads over her choices for committee chairs. Not only was her pick Murtha, implicated in the Abscam scandal, but another choice; Alcee Hastings, one of the few federal judges to be impeached by a DEMOCRAT led House and Senate...or any Congress...in history is slated to head of the House Intelligence Committee. It could be that the defeat of Murtha will not be her last defeat.
There is plenty of evidence that the "culture of corruption" will continue in Washington D. C., with or without GOP leadership. As Charles Krauthammer coined the phrase "ethically challenged" is going to dog Pelosi's leadership. Historey may redefine Steny Hoyer's comment this morning when he said they House would make her "the most successful House leader in history". It's going to be a fun two years.
