Anniversaries

For a solid week we've had every channel covering some aspect of the commemoration of Katrina's one year anniversary, I'm really curious to see if we have the same amount of coverage at the 5th anniversary of 9/11 coming up in just 13 days?  While Ray Nagin has been vilified for his recent comments, I cannot say he was wrong.

"But when Pitts points to flood-damaged cars in the street and a house washed partially into the street, the mayor shoots back. "That’s alright. You guys in New York can’t get a hole in the ground fixed and it’s five years later. So let’s be fair."

There is still a huge pit in New York City.  Why have we not rebuilt those towers?  If our grandparents were still in charge, it would have been completed three years ago, and they would be 10 stories taller than they were before 9/11!  That used to be America's response to people who try to "tear US down"!  No more.  Whiney liberals want a ridiculous "Freedom Tower" with an attendant Hall of Shame pointing out why America is the devil incarnate!  I was happy to hear that a Californian has stood up, and sounded like he was born of the "Greatest Generation".

"Team Twin Towers, an organization devoted to ensuring the reconstruction of the towers as they once stood, is one of the more vocal advocates of replica rebuilding. Their spokesman, Robin Heid, who lives in California and visited New York once (“I’m not a New Yorker and I think that helps me have a clearer vision”), believes that New York City has a responsibility not only to its own citizens, but also to the world. A counter-terrorism expert, Heid believes that rebuilding the towers as they stood would be the most profound act of counter-terrorism possible.

“If the Statue of Liberty were destroyed, it would be rebuilt,” he says. “It’s a landmark and an icon – a much larger category than architecture.” The Twin Towers “were built, destroyed, and should be rebuilt for the same reason,” he adds. “They’re the pre-eminent symbol of world trade and world peace.” Heid believes, as many proponents of rebuilding do, that exactly reconstructing the twins (with a few updated solutions) would be a powerful statement about civilization coming head to head with barbarism.

The crux of Heid’s argument centers around the skyline, something that people who support an entirely new design also consider of utmost importance. In his view, changing the skyline of New York is tantamount to submitting to the terrorists. In Heid’s mind, the terrorists will look at New York’s skyline and think, “It looks like that because of what we did.”

I could not agree more!  Let's give them something to look at!  If I could be there September 10, 2006, you'd better believe I would be there for this:

I wonder how much activity/news there will be regarding Munich, 1972? That "anniversary" is coming up real soon, too.

This country lacks something vital to it's survival. Unity.

We're supposed to be the UNITED states, and yet I don't see that much anywhere anymore. Whether it be the aftermath of one tragedy or another one of those which affected me personally [Katrina], I don't see much unification in this country. I see this side pointing fingers at that side, and vice versa and the bipartisan crap is just that.. CRAP, and has destroyed the "UNITED" of the United States.
Hard to be united when we can't stop bickering about what side is right long enough to WORK TOGETHER.

What a nice surprise, Amie! There is NO bipartison, that's the problem.  Bush-hatred has turned into a sort of mental illness for the left.  For the rest of the country, I believe there is lots of unity.

It seems to me that the hatred is as bad on both sides to be honest... such is why I choose to be non partisan.

I have and do read your blog quite often... sometimes I agree other times I don't... but that's normal.
