The Reality Of Medicine In America

This is an observation of our current medical system in America, from the perspective of a mom who has just been through hell and back with her adult son.

Let's say you are away from home, and on the job.  Let's also say you are suddenly overcome with an unknown illness.  What do you do?  You either call an ambulance (if you're capable), or someone calls it for you.  Or, if you are capable, you decide whether you want to spend $600 to $800 on an ambulance bill vs. $20 on a cab....hmmmm.  Okay, cab sounds better fiscally, unless you're having a stroke, in which case you are debilitated for life due to the wait....weigh one against the other.  If you're a husband and father, you might very well choose the cab in either case.

Now let's say the cab takes you to the nearest inner-city hospital that takes "anybody", which translates to "we don't care if you have insurance or not".  [They are disappearing from America's landscape.]  This sort of hospital who admits anyone, whether or not they have insurance, is automatically strapped for funds.  Why?  Because of a few things:  1)  Illegal immigrants who have no insurance, and therefore cannot pay for their care; 2)  Medicare and other public programs who will only pay a small amount for the care of the patient.  3) Rising costs of litigation by ambulance chasing lawyers.

So what happens to the patient who has insurance?  They get private rooms, if available...after all, they can charge more for them.  They also get every possible "test" you could possibly think of, whether you need it or not!!!  Hey, it's income, right?

In my son's case, 6+ days in the hospital netted him a multitude of CT scans, MRI's, EEG's EKG's, a spinal tap, and a medicinal concoction they sent home with him, including morphine, oxycodone, valium and an "anti-seizure" medication for what has been later diagnosed as an inner ear infection.  There was no seizure.  There was no stroke.  Without family overseeing his welfare, without constant questioning and insistence from those who love him to seek other opinions, he would still be undergoing who knows what?

The decay and skewed priorities in our healthcare system is becoming more and more disturbing.  Without TORT reform, without illegal immigration legislation, and without vigilance on the part of families, our premier medical system is doomed to failure.

All praise be to God! He does not have epilepsy! Yippee!

Okay, now that I got out, I agree with you. Those ear infections are something else. Did you know if one ear is messed up, you can lose your total balance?

I found that out the hard way. lol. Ya know how? I called my pharmacist. lol. No doctor. No bill.

See, I am on Medi-Cal. I will not go to the doctor unless it's to get my prescription re-filled. They see me for 2 minutes, and then I'm out of there.

Why do I not go to the doctor even though they keep telling me to? Because I don't believe the taxpayers should pay anymore for me than is absolutely necessary.

Am I ashamed to be on it? Yes. Do I have a choice? No, but that doesn't matter. I was brought up to not take anything from anybody. It sucks, Dagney. At least I try not to be part of the rising problem. I only go once a year. (Please don't hate me. )

I am so grateful your son is going to be alright! I know you are relieved. You did the right thing, Ma. Ya did good.

My Dear Lady, if you were one who was attempting to get something for nothing, you would no qualify as a conservative...but you most definitely ARE a conservative. The idea that you are one of those "milking the system" never occurred to me! God bless you, and thank you for your prayers...they went a long way to spiritually clarifying the situation for us all. God was and is certainly looking our for my son and his family.

Sorry you had to go through that.

That's what happens ANY time you have a 3rd-payer system. The consumer doesn't care and often ASKS for more "tests" -- because they don't have to pay for it! When the supply is unlimited and cost is zero, of COURSE they'll want MORE. And the hospital also wants MORE because it's all profit.

It was just a few decades ago when this didn't exist. If you had insurance, YOU paid up front for services, then the insurance company paid you back. People were MUCH more careful with how the money was spent when THEY had to spend it.

The system is drastically broken today, but there's so much money behind it, I'm afraid it's sadly beyond repair. Too many big money interested from government, insurance, hospitals, and lawyers absolutely oppose any changes to this system where they all make money.
